CAPITALS OF CUTLERY-Thiers, France

Thiers, France is also one of the capitals of cutlery with tradition of knife making dating back to the 14th century. During the 17th century, mass production and export of French knives was already prevalent throughout the Mediterranean, South Africa, South America and Europe. Blunted table knives also originated in this region to help reduce the risk of dinnertime knife fights. King Louis XIV banned pointed table knives in 1699, and forks held in the left hand to spear the food soon appeared. Cutlers from Thiers has produced famous knives such Laguiole, which is a regional folding knife. Another type of regional knife called 'Le Thiers' was named after the famous French town and known as the capital of cutlery industry. During the 19th century, French knife making had success and developed a strong industrial base.

The family owned company Therias et L Econome is also one of the leading knife manufacturer in France. It has produced different knife styles and varieties since 1819. Knife manufacturer TB Groupe is also known for crafting quality cutlery since 1648.
